Elephant or rhinoceros?
Lot 986
EGYPT. Alexandria. Trajan, 98-117. Dichalkon (Bronze, 14 mm, 1.21 g, 12 h), RY 17 = 113/4. Laureate head of Trajan to right. Rev. L IZ Elephant or rhinoceros walking right. Dattari (Savio) 1208. K&G 27.576. RPC III 4818. Very rare, and with an unusually clear reverse. Very fine.

There is some dispute over which animal is shown on the reverse of this issue, with suggestions ranging from an elephant to a rhinoceros, a hippopotamus or a gazelle. This example pretty much rules out the latter two, but whether the animal is an elephant or a rhinoceros remains unclear
